National Adopt a Shelter Pet Day: Week 3’s Adoptable Shelter Pets

Article by Jin Wen Xie '24

Week 3’s adoptable shelter pets at Heritage Humane Society includes two adorable animals: Pennington, a senior cat looking for plenty of head scratches at his forever home, and Meryl, a cute bunny seeking a forever home that’ll look forward to his beautiful bunny character!

Pennington is a friendly 14-year-old Domestic Medium Hair Cat. This feline friend may be deaf, but he is still incredibly active and loving. He especially adores head scratches and will often melt into your arms if given just a few affectionate head scratches. This purrfect cat companion seeks a humble home to call his own. Pennington is looking forward to spending his twilight years curled up on someone’s lap!

Meryl

Meryl is a fluffy six months old Domestic Rabbit. Unfortunately, he was discovered as an abandoned stray hopping outside, and a car nearly hit him. Thankfully, a good Samaritan saved him and sent him to Heritage Humane Society. HHS staff found him to be in good health, and after some adjusting time for relaxation and comfort, this little cutie showed the most charming bunny personality.

*Note: It isn’t uncommon for domestic rabbits to be released into the wild due to people thinking that they’re able to survive (there are currently two rabbits at HHS that were found as strays--Meryl and Snowflake, both are available for adoption). However, this is untrue as they lack the basic instincts necessary to survive in the wild. Basic instincts and skills such as finding food or hiding from predators are not something they’re capable of--not to mention their white coats make them unable to camouflage themselves.
