Compiled by Dana Armstrong '21, Scott Cummings '24, Linda Li '24, Zachary Lutzky '24, Abby Paras '24, and Jin Wen Xie '24

Inspired by the New York Times's Election Distractor, here is the DoG Street Journal's Finals Distractor. While it's important to study, it's equally important to take breaks during finals season. Here are some Spotify playlists, YouTube videos, and movie suggestions to put in the background of study sessions or use to destress at the end of a long day!

Spotify Playlists

Background Study Music

Linda's suggestions:

Scott's suggestion:

The Endless River album by Pink Floyd (all instrumental)

Fun fact: The album features a guest appearance by Dr. Stephen Hawking!

Dance Breaks

Jin's suggestion:

A mix of empowerment anthems, dance breaks, throwbacks, and positive affirmations to get you through finals--featuring feel-good pop, rock, indie, and funk.

Because we all need to rock out to some 80s tunes during finals.

Movie Suggestions

There are so many great ways to destress, but a personal favorite of mine is watching movies. There are so many great movies available on different streaming services that are perfect to just relax or zone out to. I’ve selected five of my personal favorites to share, in the hopes that it may get some people through the next week.

  • Ratatouille (2007)

  • Howl’s Moving Castle (2004)

  • Armageddon (1998)

  • Mamma Mia! (2008)

  • Any Christmas movie

YouTube Suggestions

Compiled by Dana

There’s something incredibly reassuring about a British accent--so that's why many of these YouTubers are British. I’d highly recommend these channels (plus any and all Bob Ross videos) for relaxation and/or motivation.

  • If I’m ever feeling lost, overwhelmed, and/or unmotivated to write a paper, I find that watching other people’s essay crises are oddly helpful. Here are two of my favorite YouTubers with these types of videos:

  • For trying to fall asleep after a long day of studying, nothing works better for me than ASMR. Here are videos from two of my favorite channels (the guy looks like Thor?!) plus a very weird and hilarious Bubonic Plague themed one.

  • I don't know about you, but I always feel stiff after hunching over an exam or laptop for hours. This is the perfect way to stretch out and wind down. Plus, she has a very sweet dog!
